What Should You Document at the Scene of a Car Accident?

Writing Notes
|

It is important to document as much as you can at the scene of a car accident. Along with your police report, you will need as much evidence as possible from the scene. If you or any passengers require medical attention, do not attempt to document until your injuries have been initially treated. Use the camera on your phone to take photos and videos of the scene, damage to the car, and any injuries.

If the police arrive to the scene, explain clearly and briefly what happened and DO NOT speculate about fault. Be sure to ask how you can obtain a copy of their report. If the officers ask whether you suffered an injury, you may feel unsure. In that instance, say you are not certain instead of simply saying “No;” the shock of an accident may mask any pain in the moment, leading to symptoms to develop later. There are instances you may not even realize you suffered an injury until long after the incident.

The investigating police officers will gather information about the drivers, passengers, and even pedestrians, if they were with involved with or witnessed the accident. It is very helpful that you get the details of the driver and passengers in the other vehicle(s) as well. This includes:

  • Names and contract information (addressed, phone numbers, emails, etc.)
  • The insurance company and policy number of the other driver(s).
  • The driver’s license and license plate, make, model and color of the other vehicle(s).
  • The exact location of the accident.

Be sure to collect the contact information of passing witnesses who could corroborate the police report. This information can be very useful when filing a car accident claim.
